AhlulBayt News Agency: Deeply disturbed by the horrors he witnessed and participated in during Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon, Israeli soldier Daniel Edri took his own life after returning home.
According to Hebrew media, Edri set himself on fire inside his vehicle in the Biriya Forest near Safad, in the occupied Upper Galilee, on Friday.
Reports suggest he had been suffering from severe psychological trauma.
Edri’s mother told Walla News that her son was haunted by the “smell and sight of bodies,” and frequently said, “I can’t take it anymore.”
He had served in military operations in both Gaza and Lebanon. The Israeli army acknowledges a surge in suicides since its war on Gaza began in October 2023.
Since then, the number of soldiers contemplating or threatening suicide has reportedly increased by 145%, according to official military data.
A study conducted by Tel Aviv University revealed that 12% of reservists who served in Gaza are dealing with serious psychological disorders and are now classified as unfit for duty.
The war in Gaza, now entering its 21st month, continues to generate reports of atrocities. Human rights organizations warn of widespread civilian deaths, targeted attacks on hospitals, and aid convoys being hit.
UN investigators say they have uncovered mass graves near hospitals in Gaza, such as al-Shifa and Nasser, with evidence of executions — including bound hands and gunshot wounds.
The Gaza Health Ministry reports that more than 57,000 Palestinians — mostly women and children — have been killed since Israel’s military offensive began in October 2023.
